Why Queensland Reserves Plumbing for Licence Holders

Queensland requires an occupational licence before anyone may carry out plumbing and drainage work, and a business that takes that work on also holds a contractor licence. The QBCC, the state's building regulator, issues both.

  • An occupational licence proves the holder has the skills for the trade.
  • A contractor licence proves the business taking the job on has the financial capacity and business training to run jobs properly.
  • Our own licence, QBCC No: 15024607, covers licensed plumbing and gasfitting.

The trades split further. A plumber's licence covers plumbing work on fixtures and pipework, apart from jobs that need a separate endorsement. A drainer's licence covers drainage work below ground level: the sewer line and the stormwater line laid outside the house.

Gas work sits apart again, and only a licensed gasfitter may do it. You are entitled to sight that licence before any gas job starts.

How Plumbing Work Is Regulated in Queensland

Two bodies share the oversight: the QBCC licenses plumbers and registers notifiable work, while the local council assesses applications, issues permits and inspects. You can check a licence yourself, because the QBCC's online registers show who is licensed, and a search by address shows whether a Form 4 was lodged for your property.

  1. Form 4

after notifiable work, the owner receives a copy of the Form 4, and the QBCC will provide one if it never arrives.

  2. Gas certificate

when a licensed gasfitter finishes a new gas installation or an alteration, the owner receives the gas system compliance certificate straight away, as covered on our gas fitting page.

  3. Council inspection

you may ask the council to inspect notifiable work at any stage.

  4. Complaints

raise suspected defective work with the plumber first, then with the QBCC if it is not resolved.

Regulated work splits into permit work, notifiable work and minor work, and a licensed plumber or drainer must do all three. The QBCC says using one protects your home, your health and your rights.

Questions People Ask About Our Licence

Call (07) 3520 4094

What is the difference between a plumber and a drainer?

A plumber's licence covers plumbing work on the fixtures and pipework inside your home. A drainer's licence covers drainage work below ground level, meaning the sewer line and the stormwater line laid outside. The QBCC licenses the two trades separately, and both must follow the same codes.

Does a gas job on my Kallangur home need a separate licence?

Yes, Queensland allows only a licensed gasfitter to carry out gas work, which includes installing, altering, repairing, servicing, testing and certifying a gas system. You are entitled to sight that licence before gas work begins.

Is every job in Kallangur done by a licensed plumber?

Yes, every job is done by a licensed plumber. We are licensed and insured, and the person at your door holds the licence classes the work needs.

Is the work covered by a warranty?

Yes, our labour carries a lifetime labour warranty, and our Fix-It-or-It's-Free guarantee backs the fix (T&Cs apply).
